Steve Rother clinic

For the third year we are hosting a clinic by Steve Rother and his Excel With Horses Program.  Many of you may remember Steve winning the 2016 Trainer’s Challenge at the Mane Events in Red Deer.  More information about Steve and his training methods is available on his website at

As was the case last year, he will not be bringing a horse so he can give each participant the attention needed.  You will receive immediate feedback directly from Steve on what is being done correctly or incorrectly, and what variations will help you get better results with your horse.  Please note that this is not a colt starting clinic.  Your horse should have been ridden for a minimum of six (6) months.

Dates:     August 10 to 13, 2017 (4 days Thursday through Sunday)

Time:     Each session of the clinic will run each day for approximately 5 to 6 hours with a lunch break.  As was the case last year, two sessions per day will be organized.

Location:     The clinic is being held at the Fort Macleod and District Agricultural Society’s Midnight Stadium.  This arena is located on the south side of Highway #3 on the west side of Fort Macleod.  See interactive map.

Camping:     Camping with your horses is available on the south end of the grounds.  It’s an open area so any horses that get loose will wander onto the surrounding roads and highway.  Therefore, all horses kept overnight must be contained in a pen or stall, not tied.  Tying to trailers, highlines, etc. is not permitted; electric fencing is also not permitted.

Box stalls or pen costs are the responsibility of individual participants.  Indoor box stalls are available for $30 per day and includes 1 bag of shavings.  Outdoor pens are $20 per day or a large pen is $20 per horse per day.  Contact Gene Miller (403-394-9976) to make arrangements for box stalls or pens.  Alternatively you can bring your own portable pen.

Fresh water and washrooms are available at the arena.

Equipment:     Rope halter with 12′ – 14′ lead line.  Partner stick and string if available.  It is preferred that the horse be ridden in a snaffle bit (if possible) for this clinic.  However, whatever tack you normally ride in is fine.  The same horse must be used for all four days.

Participants:     A maximum of 30 participants can be accommodated in this clinic.  Members in good standing will be subsidized by SATRA for two thirds of the cost – this requires being a member for the current year plus the two immediately proceeding years.  Club members not meeting this requirement are welcome but must pay the full price.

The clinic will be opened to non-members after March 15, 2017.

Participant Cost:     The clinician charges $550 per participant.  With the club subsidy for qualified members the participant fee will be $185.

Payment for this clinic is non-refundable.  A cheque made out to SATRA, or cash, can be personally provided to Gene Miller (please don’t mail cash).  Also, cheques can be mailed to:

Gene Miller,   P.O. Box 247,   Coalhurst  AB,   T0L 0V0

The complete clinic fee must be received by May 1, 2017, otherwise your reserved spot will be provided to the next person on the wait list.

Spectator Cost:     Spectators are welcome, but there is a fee to do so.  $20 per day if paying for individual days; $35 for two days; $45 for three days; or $50 for all four days.  Spectator fees will be collected at the door.

Meals:     Meals and beverages are not provided.

Contact:     Contact Gene Miller (403-394-9976) for any questions about this clinic.

Please use the following link to register – a maximum of 30 participants will be accepted.  This form is used to gather the particulars of interested participants but the first 30 will be accepted in the order the payments are received.  Any registrations received after this will be wait-listed and contacted if an opening becomes available.
